Complying with the regulations of the Oklahoma DEQ, Halliburton “collected water samples from the wells, which are located on Duncan’s north side.” Company officials believe that the presence of perchlorate in the water is the result of a project that ended 20 years ago, which involved the “removal and burning of spent fuel contained in missile casings.” (Associated Press)
Jim Prestidge, Halliburton’s vice president of health, safety, environment and service quality, vowed that everything humanly possible would be done to find a solution to the perchlorate problem.
“Halliburton will continue working with the Oklahoma DEQ to develop a long term solution to this issue.” (Associated Press)

I read that perchlorate can cause damage to the thyroid. Is this true?
Unfortunately, yes. Perchlorate’s “disrupts the thyroid’s ability to produce hormones needed for normal growth and development.” (EPA) People with preexisting thyroid conditions, as well as “pregnant women and their fetuses,” (EPA) are especially vulnerable if they drink water that is poisoned with perchlorate. In addition to its effects on the thyroid, perchlorate interferes with the metabolic process and mental capability.
Note:Please be advised that perchlorate doesn’t exist in water supplies exclusively. It can be found in “beef, lettuce, milk, berries and other agricultural products.” (EPA)
