However, the firm is only considering cases in which a child or adolescent was prescribed Seroquel and developed diabetes.
Seroquel, a medication marketed in the United States by AstraZenaca, is prescribed to treat a number of behavioral, emotional, mood and mental health disorders. The drug, which is classified as an anti-psychotic, is given to older children, teenagers and young adults to treat conditions such as bipolar disorder, bipolar depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and schizophrenia.
Serious Health Problems Linked to the Use of Seroquel
The drug, which works by balancing the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, has been linked to a number of serious—and in some cases—potentially life threatening side effects.
In particular, children, adolescents and young adults who have been prescribed Seroquel face considerable risk to develop Type 2 diabetes.
There is no cure for diabetes, and Seroquel patients who become diabetics face a lifetime of vital medical care, and must follow strict rules concerning their diet, their use of alcohol as well as any over-the-counter and prescription drugs they take to treat other health conditions.
Diabetics also face a number of health complications, including risks for pancreatitis, kidney disorders and liver disease. Diabetes patients also face an increased risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke, as well as circulatory problems that can affect the legs and feet (including minor cuts or blister on their feet are prone to develop infections and other health complications).
In addition, diabetics are also at risk for vision problems, including cataracts, glaucoma and the potential for permanent vision loss.
