In 2004, a woman was electrocuted on a wet New York City street. Her family subsequently secured a lawsuit settlement from Con Edison, which was responsible for the stray electric shock that killed her.
The woman reportedly was killed after stepping on an electrified metal plate near a bakery in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan.
According to the New York Times, the metal plate she stepped on had been electrified by a wire inside a utility box that had not been properly insulated.
A subsequent safety review conducted by Con Ed determined that workers had improperly insulated a wire.
Electric shock lawsuits: Seek compensation for injury and wrongful deathThe lawyers of Weitz & Luxenberg P.C. have the legal knowledge to evaluate electrocution and electric shock accidents.
These cases are often complex and can happen on a job site or on the street in your neighborhood. They can also involve the negligence of a third party - either through negligent conduct or a defective product.
We assess such cases in a through manner, investigating all factors that may result in the shock or electrocution of an innocent person. Stray electricity can cause ventricular fibrillation, or rapid, ineffective heartbeat, and can lead to death in a matter of minutes unless a defibrillator is used.
