In recent news about the dangers of asbestos an ex-electrician with lung cancer has dedicated his life to warning fellow electricians, carpenters, plumbers and other tradespeople how to remain safe on jobs that may disturb asbestos.
The electrician recalls that in 1965, he worked on a renovation project that took three nights to complete.
His work involved tearing down ceiling sheets and knocking down walls. He recalled there was dust everywhere.
The electrician was very concerned and spoke to the builder in charge, who reassured him it wasn't the asbestos dust he feared.
However, in June 2007, he was diagnosed with asbestos related lung cancer, decades after he was exposed.
Asbestos-related diseases can take anywhere from 15 to 40 years to present with symptoms.
The electrician has this message for those in high-risk fields for asbestos exposure: "If there is a substance there you don't know about, get the information. Protect yourself."
He and his family remain positive about his health: "Every day is a bonus and you just carry on."
