ElevatorsThe first elevators were platforms hoisted up by chains and ropes. Elevators as we know them today are made of square boxes called cabs or "cages." They are attached to a platform in a shaft. |
EscalatorsThe first escalator was invented by Jesse W. Reno. He installed it as a ride at The Coney Island theme park in New York in 1897. It was further developed by Charles Seeberger who joined the Otis Elevator Company. He installed the first commercial escalator. It won first prize at the French Exposition Universelle in 1900. |
