Federal authorities want to find out whether a former local industrial cleanup site in Elmira Heights, New York is affecting the quality of the air in nearby homes, reported the Elmira Star-Gazette.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has sent letters to residents in the Elmira Heights area, asking for permission to test the air in their homes for traces of trichloroethylene, or TCE, a common industrial solvent.
The EPA is conducting the tests because of the proximity of the former Facet Enterprises Superfund cleanup site.

According to the EPA, The Facet Enterprises, Inc. Superfund site may have posed a public health hazard.
The site has the potential to contribute along with other possible sources in the region, to the TCE contamination at the Sullivan Street Wellfield.
The site poses a public health hazard because future exposures to contaminants in groundwater could occur at levels that are of public health concern.
