![]() |
Are you in need of a Toxic Tort Lawyer in The Sooner State? The EPA has designated Imperial Refining Company in Oklahoma as a Superfund site because of its amounts of environmental toxins and threat to the natural world. You can read the report for the site below.
Some Superfund sites are on the National Priority Site Lists. The National Priorities List ("NPL") is the list of hazardous waste sites in the United States eligible for long-term remedial action financed under the federal Superfund program. Environmental Protection Agency regulations outline a formal process for assessing hazardous waste sites and placing them on the NPL. The NPL is intended primarily to guide the EPA in determining which sites warrant further investigation.
Sites are listed on the NPL upon completion of Hazard Ranking System (HRS) screening, public solicitation of comments about the proposed site, and after all comments have been addressed. EPA may delete a final NPL site if it determines that no further response is required to protect human health or the environment. Sites where a remediation was completed through the Superfund program are typically deleted from the NPL.

Fact Sheet Updated: September 2005
Current Status
The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) and the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) are working with the State contractor to finalize the remedial investigation and feasibility study work
plans, and continue to coordinate fieldwork investigation and sampling efforts that began on September
14, 2005. The field teams will be sampling soil, surface water, ground water, waste, ecological and
sediment through October 2005.
Benefits
At this time, a complete understanding of the site and the nature and extent of waste is unknown. Using
the limited information gained through the preliminary, site, and removal assessments, we have
developed work plans that will provide us with the data necessary to make decisions regarding risk and
site cleanup.
Site Description
Location: The site is located on Highway 142, Ardmore, Carter County, Oklahoma.
Population: There are an estimated 130 residents who live within 200 feet of the facility and an
estimated 23,427 individuals who live within four miles of the facility. There is no school
or daycare center located within 200 feet of the facility.
Setting: Imperial Refining is an inactive and abandoned crude oil refining facility that operated
from 1917 until 1934 when it declared bankruptcy.
Wastes And Volumes
When the facility ceased operations, the tanks, piping, and structures were dismantled. Information
obtained during the preliminary and site assessments, suggests that during this activity, waste products
associated with these materials may have been dumped onto the ground. The waste includes
contaminated soils from tank bottoms, coke piles, reservoir sediments, and building rubble.
The waste piles are found in 12 areas onsite and are characterized as dry, asphalt-like tar mats
associated with oil-contaminated soil on top of an oil-stained clay. During the removal assessment, the
volume for all 12 areas was estimated to be between 15,000 and 17,000 cubic yards. Analytical results
from all assessments found BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethlybenzene, and xylene), PAHs (polynuclear
aromatic hydrocarbons), O&G (oil and grease), and metals.
This will be revised upon completion of the remedial investigation and feasibility study.

Human Health And Ecological Risk Assessment
The potential exists for elevated health/ecological risk levels associated with BTEX (benzene, toluene,
ethlybenzene, and xylene), PAHs (polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons), O&G (oil and grease), and metals
involved in refinery activities. At present, the media of concern include surface water, sediments,
surrounding wetland areas, and soil. Ground water and air have yet to be evaluated.
This will be revised upon completion of the remedial investigation, feasibility study, and risk assessments.
