Charles A. Wheeler patented ideas for the first practical moving staircase in 1892, though it was not erected at that time. Instead, some of its components were enfolded in the prototype built by the Otis Elevator Company in 1899.
Jesse W. Reno created the very first escalator and erected it as an amusement ride at Coney Island, in Brooklyn, New York in 1897. Charles Seeberger further enhanced it and joined up with the Otis Elevator Company in 1899. Together they created the first commercial escalator, which won a top prize at the Paris 1900 Exposition Universelle in France.
The Otis escalator was designed drawing from the features of Mr. Seeberger's creation. The business later fused together the best features of both the Reno and Seeberger creations. Later, in 1921, they erected an escalator of the type used in today's buildings. These enhancements in design brought the escalator into frequent use in department stores and banks and in metropolitan railroad and subway stations.
The German company Orenstein & Koppel (O&K), also became a major player in escalator design and manufacture.
