Work-related fatal falls rise to a record 835 in 2007
October 10, 2008 -- A total of 5,488 fatal work injuries were recorded in the United States in 2007, a decrease of 6 percent from the revised total of 5,840 in 2006, the U.S. Department of Labor said in a new report titled, “2007 Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries.”
Key findings of the report indicate that the number of fatal falls in 2007 rose to a series high of 835, representing a 39 percent increase since 1992 when the Department of Labor started collecting this data.
Fatal falls dominate New York City statistics
In 2007, fatal occupational injuries in New York City totaled 81. Discounting assaults and violent acts (27), the majority of occupational fatalities (23) were attributed to falls.
All 23 fatal falls in New York City were among salaried workers. Only three involved women. Other characteristics included: fall from a ladder (4); fall from a roof (4); and fall from a scaffold (4).
