Some Medical Devices Not Fully Reviewed by the FDA
In January 2009, a congressional report was released alleging that several medical devices, including hip joints and a defibrillator device, received FDA approval without a complete review. The report, published by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) states that from 2003-2007, the FDA approved 228 medical devices without a full scale review.
While the report does not mention a specific brand of device that may have been approved without a comprehensive FDA review, in the past several years, hip component devices and defibrillators have been the subject of recalls.
The full report can be reviewed on the GAO’s site at http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d09190.pdf.
