Is Birds Eye Wastewater the Cause of High Toxin Levels In Fennville, MI Wells?
Since the 1920, Birds Eye has processed and sold foods to consumers throughout the United States. Their Fennville, MI plant, where fruits and vegetables are processed, has a practice of combining sediments with wastewater, called “dregs,” and spraying it on fields in the Fennville area.
For Fennville residents who obtain their water from wells, their water has been contaminated with high levels of arsenic, iron and manganese. A Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) investigation has linked the contamination to the wastewater dregs Birds Eye has sprayed in the area.
Birds Eye representatives claim the contents of the wastewater spray contains dissolved sugars, salts and other ingredients from their fruit processing operation.
However, the DEQ investigation has revealed that the wastewater leaches into the wells, where it starts a chemical reaction that depletes oxygen from the water supply in those wells. Once the oxygen is gone, the water’s chemical makeup changes and the higher, and potentially toxic levels of arsenic, manganese and iron contaminate the wells.
In addition to the risk of injury for those who may have ingested the contaminated water, the affected property owners are fearful of a significant loss in property values or funding highly expensive repairs to their property associated with tapping into the Fennville city water company’s pipelines.
