Contamination of Fennville, MI Wells From Area Food Processing Plant Wastewater
For months, over 50 Fennville, MI area residents have depended on bottled water after learning the water in their wells was unsafe because of high levels of organic chemicals, including arsenic. The cause of the well contamination has been linked to wastewater sprayed in the area.
Fennville is home to a processing facility for one the nation’s best known food brands: Birds Eye. For decades, the company has processed canned and frozen fruits, vegetables and other food products sold throughout the United States. The Fennville facility, which processes only fruit and vegetables, has been recycling the remains of processed fruits, called “dregs,” and combined it with wastewater which was sprayed over fields in the area.
While the wastewater is not known to contain any toxins, the wastewater has caused environmental problems to occur.
An investigation by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) revealed that the wastewater leached into area wells. The wastewater caused a chemical reaction to occur, where oxygen levels were depleted and levels of arsenic, manganese and iron in the well water increased to unsafe levels.
