Coal “Float-Sink” Labs: Information from our Law Firm
Exposure to PCE, also known as PERC is known to cause central nervous system disorders. Workers at float-sink labs harmed by PCE may get a free legal review of their potential case from our law firm.
For U.S. energy companies dependent on fossil fuel to produce energy, testing of the coal they purchase is critical to cost-efficient business practices. That is why these companies use the services of coal testing laboratories (which are known as “float-sink” labs) to test the quality of the coal they have purchased.
Samples of the coal loaded onto barges is taken to the float sink labs for testing. The coal is tested for moisture, ash and sulfur levels. The coal is also tested to determine its Btu (thermal) level.
Unfortunately, one of the chemicals used at coal float-sink testing laboratories is tetrachloroethylene (also known as perchloroethylene, PCE or PERC). Exposure to PCE is known to cause a variety of adverse health issues, including central nervous system disorders. Both U.S. and international health agencies have listed PERC on their list of potential cancer-causing substances.
The environmental lawyers at Weitz & Luxenberg are litigators with extensive courtroom experience and an in-depth understanding of the environmental laws involving PERC exposure. The firm recently secured a landmark settlement against some of the country's biggest oil companies for contaminating public drinking water supplies with a gasoline additive known as methyl butyl tertiary ether, or MTBE. Most of those defendants agreed to pay $423 million to settle suits involving the contamination of 153 public and private drinking water systems nationally.
