Florida Mesothelioma Lawyer
A question that has puzzled people in Florida for a very long time is why does asbestos cause cancer?
The question is asked because no one is quite sure how asbestos and cancer are linked. Not even scientists who’ve studied the issue at length can answer the question. All they know is that asbestos does in fact cause cancer.
In particular, it causes a type of cancer called mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma mainly affects either the victim’s lungs or peritoneum.
In the lungs, what mesothelioma does is disrupt the delicate lining that protects the air sacs and other structures that support breathing. Once they’re far enough damaged, the cancer victim dies.
With mesothelioma cancer, death usually arrives within a year after the victim first becomes aware that he or she has the disease.
The tragedy is made all the worse by the fact that the chain of events leading to the development of the cancer usually traces back 20, 30 or 40 years. That’s how long it takes for the body to become cancer-stricken after exposure to asbestos.
Asbestos is a mineral that comes from the ground. In Florida, asbestos no longer is used as much as it was in the early and middle parts of the 20th Century. Back then, it was used in all sorts of products, but mainly those where it was important to contain high heat so as to shield people and objects from temperature damage. Asbestos didn’t cost much to mine or to use, so that’s why the mineral showed up in so many places around the Sunshine State.
Comparatively few new products today use asbestos, but a great many older ones made with asbestos are still in use; if you were to initiate a search, you probably would have no trouble finding such products – especially if you looked in older homes and office buildings.
Many Floridians worry that they have encountered asbestos and been contaminated by it. If you have such a worry, consult a physician for advice. And, if it turns out that asbestos has harmed you, consult next an attorney – you may be entitled to substantial sums of money in compensation for an asbestos injury, such as the development of mesothelioma cancer.
