Merck Faces Suit over Fosamax

Boston Globe, United States - Apr 13, 2006
According to a lawsuit filed Monday in US District Court in Fort Myers, Fla., Fosamax is a defective product because it can cause osteonecrosis of the jaw, or a rotting of the jaw bone. The suit, which seeks class action status, alleges that Merck concealed and continues to hide Fosamax's potentially dangerous side effects from patients and doctors.

Fosamax Does More Harm than Good

Media Monitors Network, CA - Apr 16, 2006
The discovery, published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, prompted both the FDA and Novartis to issue warnings to physicians and dentists about the risk for the potential adverse effect.

According to LIJ, "ONJ is a condition in which the bone tissue in the jaw fails to heal after minor trauma such as a tooth extraction, causing the bone to be exposed." The exposure, the doctors said, can eventually lead to infection and fracture and may require long-term antibiotic therapy or surgery to remove the dying bone tissue.

Fosamax could be Merck's next legal problem - WSJ

Middle East North Africa Financial Network, Jordan - Apr 12, 2006
Merck & Co. drug Fosamax could be the next source of legal trouble for the drugmaker as plaintiffs' attorneys look at links between long-term use of the osteoporosis drug and a rare jaw disease, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.
