Alendronate Sodium - Fosamax, Scientifically
Alendronate Sodium, the scientific or generic name for Fosamax, is an FDA
approved bisphosphonate medication used to treat or prevent the onset of
Osteoperosis mainly in pre-menopausal women.
This medication is also
recommended to prevent bone loss in cancer patients, particularly individuals
who have had prolonged steroid use (such as prednisone or
cortisone)
Alendronate Sodium is prescibed as a daily or weekly pill, and
can also be dispensed through an IV.
The weekly pill also contains a
week's dosage of Vitamin D. Individuals taking this medication are advised to
get adequate calcium and Vitamin D each day and to avoid any invasive dental
procedures.
Recent investigations have revealed a link between
Alendronate Sodium and a painful bone disease of the jaw, Osteonecrosis.
