Negligence Lawsuits: When Freight Elevators Break Down

Freight elevators are utilized often in buildings across the country. As with other kinds of elevators, it is imperative they meet specific requirements and regulations. It is also essential that they undergo inspection frequently to insure they are safe.

If an elevator has not been subject to the proper inspection, this could ultimately lead to negligence for which you might be entitled to a money settlement if you've been harmed in an elevator break-down of some sort.

Freight elevators are used to carry objects, as opposed to people. (People are often inside the freight, however.) Freight elevators are not required to maintain various ASME A17.1 code requirements, due to the fact that they are deemed "not for public use."

Freight elevators or service elevators can also bypass various requirements involving fire service. Yet new versions of these elevators must heed those codes. Additionally, freight elevators must post a written document inside the car indicating that it is prohibited for passengers to take that elevator.

Freight elevators are usually larger and better able to carry heavy objects than passenger elevators, normally from 5,000 to 10,000 lb.

Automobile lifts are a customized type of freight elevator. These lifts are utilized to carry vehicles around a car garage. These are material lifts by definition and they may bypass the ASME A17.1 requirements. However they be required to attend to the requirements of ALIALCTV.
