Gadolinium Study: Increased Risk for Death in Renal Patients with NSF
A new study published in the October issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism finds that in patients receiving hemodialysis, nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) is a predictor of early death. NSF is a potentially skin disease that triggers thickening of the skin, organs, and other tissues that makes it difficult to move and can lead to broken bones.
The study results indicate that exposure to gadolinium-based contrast dye significantly raises the risk of developing NSF in patients with kidney conditions.
The journal article noted that compared with patients who had not been exposured to gadolinium, those with exposure to the dye were almost 15 times more likely to develop "cutaneous changes of NSF."
Reseachers found that of patients receiving dialysis, 13 percent had NSF.
The Food and Drug Administration issued the strongest labeling for Gadolinium-based dyes, the so-called "black-box warning," on September 28, 2007.
