Read about the Health Risks Related to Gadolinium MRI Contrast Dye

An MRI can lead to debilitating side effects when a gadolinium-based contrast agent is used.

The Food and Drug Administration is notifying health care providers and the general public that patients with moderate to end-stage kidney disease who receive an MRI or MRA with a gadolinium-based contrast agent may get Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF). It is a debilitating skin condition that may cause death.

NSF (also known as Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy) creates scar tissue so thick that it immobilizes skin and joints. In the most serious cases, it can paralyze internal organs as well, with fatal results.

The FDA is urging patients who believe they may have NSF to contact their doctor. The Agency is also cautioning that patients with moderate to end-stage kidney disease who need an imaging study, to select imaging methods other than MRI or MRA with a gadolinium-based contrast agent for the study whenever possible.
