GEFITINIB LUNG CANCER
Researchers to conduct clinical trial of lung cancer drug for treatment on patients with mesothelioma
Phase II of a clinical trial to test the lung cancer drug "gefitinib" on patients with mesothelioma.
Clinical trial: Gefitinib lung cancer drug:
September 18, 2009 - The National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md., is seeking 40 patients with asbestos-related mesothelioma to test a cancer drug known as “gefitinib.”
Gefitinib, used to treat many types of lung cancer, prevents cell growth in cancerous cells by targeting proteins located in the cells. Proteins are typically high in cancer cells.
The study is in Phase II of a clinical trial. Researchers hope to determine the efficacy of gefitinib for patients diagnosed with mesothelioma, the deadliest of cancers linked to occupational contact with asbestos.
Participants will receive daily doses of an oral version of gefitinib and will be monitored by clinicians and researchers for up to four years.

Gefitinib has yet to show conclusive evidence that proves it may improve symptoms or extend life in mesothelioma patients, but doctors are hopeful that this last phase of clinical trials will not only demonstrate sufficient data, but will lead to a full FDA approval.
