Guidant Defibrillators: Characteristics of the Ventricular Fibrillation
Waveform

BREAKING NEWS: 10.15.07--Medtronic, Inc., the world's largest maker of electronic heart devices, announced they are suspending sales of Sprint Fidelis leads. According to the FDA, these wires, used to connect defibrillators to the heart, may break or erode and may increase chance of injury. Learn more about the Medtronic Sprint Fidelis Recall. |
Ventricular fibrillation may be illustrated in terms of its electrocardiographic waveform appearance. All waveforms can be described in terms of individual features such as amplitude and frequency.
Researchers have looked at the frequency of the ventricular fibrillation waveform to figure out whether it helps to elucidate the underlying mechanism of the arrhythmia or holds any clinically useful information.
In the recent years, Gray has suggested an underlying mechanism for the frequency of the waveform that has puzzled investigators as possibly being a manifestation of the Doppler effect of rotors of fibrillation [Gray RA et al. 1998]. Analysis of the fibrillation waveform is achieved by using a mathematical technique known as Fourier analysis.
