Weitz & Luxenberg hexavalent chromium can have devastating health effects

Chromium poisoning is widespread and silent. A recent study found that 31 American cities (out of 35 samples taken) have chromium in the water, and their average was .18 parts per billion, three times the recommended safe level. The worst sample taken came from Norman, Oklahoma, with an incredible 12.9 parts per billion: 215 times the recommended level.

The careless negligence of major industrial corporations ruins health and finances. Chromium has affected you, and now is the time to contact Weitz & Luxenberg to learn about your legal options. Even if your exposure was far in the past, you still have a case against the polluters who poisoned you. Chromium poisoning is a serious cancer risk, and you should not suffer other people's negligence without help. Fill out the form on this page and a Weitz & Luxenberg representative will contact you.

Although humans require a trace amount of chromium in their diet in its non-toxic form, industrialization produces a hexavalent form that is quite toxic to humans. It was this “chromium(VI)” poisoning the drinking water in the famous case against Pacific Gas & Electric spearheaded by Erin Brockovich. In that case, Ms. Brockovich championed the people of Hinkley, California's right to know what they were being exposed to. Ms. Brockovich-Ellis is now a consultant for Weitz & Luxenberg.

Research has shown that inhalation is the more dangerous method of exposure to chromium(VI). The precise dangers of ingestion are unknown, but in the Hinkley case uncovered by Ms. Brockovich, the cancer rates were nearly 3 times the average.

How chromium poisons you

Chromium(VI) is commonly used as an anti-corrosive coating in many metallic structures and devices.  Over time it leeches into groundwater. Furthermore, dye and paint manufacturers and leather tanners use it in their production process, where it poisons the air and soil around the work site – can it also get into groundwater in this case?. Chromium(VI) is known to cause damage to the kidneys, the liver and blood cells through oxidation reactions, causing hemolysis, a condition in which red blood cells rupture, renal and liver failure.
