The Washington Post has reported that a deadly contaminant in heparin is responsible for as many as 81 deaths in the U.S. The contaminant is oversulfated chondroitin sulfate. It is a man-made chemical that was added to batches of heparin imported from China.
Adverse reactions to the deadly heparin include a drastic lowering of blood pressure, nausea and shortness of breath within 30 minutes after ingestion. In China, heparin is made in small, unregulated companies and it has been suggested that the lack of regulation contributed to the contamination of heparin.
