Detection method found for contaminant in heparin
Contaminant detection method for heparin
The Washington Post has reported on a detection method for a contaminant in heparin. The contaminant- oversulfated chondroitin sulfate, has been linked to as many as 81 deaths in the U.S.
A detection method for the heparin contaminant has been found. This method involves the measurement of prothrombin time. This is the time required for blood to clot. Research shows that coagulation time is shortened as the amount of the heparin contaminant in a blood sample increases.
