Weitz & Luxenberg law firm reports two more
deaths related to the blood thinner heparin
The personal injury law firm of Weitz & Luxenberg, recognized in legal circles for achieving record-breaking verdicts and settlements for injured clients, will accept heparin cases from patients harmed by the popular, but unreliable, medication.
Heparin law firm news update
May 12, 2009 – According to news reports, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said yesterday that it was investigating the death of two Delaware hospital patients who were given heparin blood thinner.
Three patients at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Del., suffered adverse reactions after being given the drug last week.
Two of the patients – a 71-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman – died over the weekend. The third patient, a 68-year-old man, remained hospitalized yesterday. All three reportedly suffered cerebral hemorrhages.
The drug’s manufacturer is Baxter Healthcare Corp., a unit of Deerfield, Ill.-based Baxter International Inc.
History of problems
Baxter was involved in heparin recalls last year after more than 400 patients reported adverse reactions and at least 100 persons died as a result of contaminated heparin made in China.
The families of those who died from the contaminated medication filed a heparin class action lawsuit early this year against Baxter International. The complaint, filed in St. Clair (Ill.) County Circuit Court by some 28 plaintiffs, accuses Baxter of substituting less expensive ingredients to “reap greater profits.”
Movie actor Dennis Quaid goes to court
Heparin made headlines last year when movie actor Dennis Quaid and his wife sued Baxter International after their newborn twins became severely ill from an adult dose of the blood thinner.
Though the Quaid family incident is unrelated to the recent drug contamination issue, the family accused Baxter of failing to label children's heparin vials distinctly from vials intended for adults.
Both the child and the adult vials of the blood thinner had similar blue labels that led hospital employees to accidentally administer the wrong medicine to his children.
