Contaminant in Supply Found to Cause Heparin Allergic Reactions

On March 5, 2008, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which has been investigating the cause of allergic reactions in Baxter International Inc.'s blood thinner Heparin, said it has found a contaminant in the supply chain. The inquiry had been sparked by an onslaught of allergic reactions from the popular blood-thinner.
An agency spokesperson told the Chicago Tribune newspaper that it had found a heparin-like compound that is not heparin in the drug's supply chain. The contaminant was found in "5 to 20" percent of the Heparin tested, however, the FDA said that it still has not found the root cause of the problem.
In a conference call with reporters, the spokesperson said the agency was investigating "whether the introduction was accidental or it was deliberate."
