Heparin Timeline: Dates & Information
2008
February 28th: Baxter announces recall of Heparin. No information on the root cause of the defective drug discovered yet, though the FDA is looking into a Chinese plant that uses pig intestines in the development process.
February 20th: FDA inspects Chinese manufacturing plant.
February 11th: Baxter announces it will stop production of multi-dose Heparin vials because of allergic reactions.
January 17th: Baxter recalls 9 lots of Heparin multi-dose vials. The CDC says 8 of the lots were produced between September and November at Baxter's Cherry Hill plant.
January 7th: Dialysis patients experiencing allergic reactions from Heparin at St. Louis Children's are called the "initial cluster" by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
2007
November 19th: Doctors at St. Louis Children's Hospital treat the first child to have an allergic reaction from Heparin.>/p>
September-November: Lots of heparin containing the active ingredient from China are produced, filled and finished at Baxter's Cherry Hill, N.J., plant for shipment to hospitals and dialysis centers.
September: Baxter International Inc. inspects the Changzhou, China, plant that has supplied Baxter with Heparin's active ingredient since 2004. The plant is owned by Scientific Protein Laboratories of Waunakee, Wis.
