New York Times Reports on Chinese Link in Latest Heparin Warnings
A February 28, 2008 article in the New York Times reported on the recent FDA warning on the blood-thinner Heparin, which is manufactured by Baxter International.
This latest FDA warning has again brought focus back to the quality of products produced in China and imported into the United States.
The Times reported that U.S. investigators are trying to determine whether the raw material for the drug was made with contaminated raw materials from China. While the owner of the factory that produces much of the active ingredient has stated the company’s supply line is safe, U.S. investigators are reviewing the factory’s records.
Heparin is produced from pig intestines, which are processed to produce a dry substance known as crude heparin. The Chinese heparin market has become increasingly unsettled over the last year because of an outbreak of pig disease that has depleting stocks.
