JAMA Study: Antacids May Increase Risk of Hip Fracture for 50 and Over

According to a study printed in the January 2007 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, Proton pump inhibitors--or antacids--such as Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid, may increase the risk of hip fracture in those over 50.

The study found that patients who took prescriptions for that class of drug for a year or more were 44 percent more likely to have a hip fracture than those that did not take that type of medication.

Researchers also found that those who took antacids in higher doses, above the recommended prescription, for over a year increased their chances of hip fracture by three times, compared to nonusers.
