Weitz & Luxenberg alerts public to toxic emissions of Holcim Cement Plant
Tells residents they can fight corporate pollution in Dundee, MI
The lawyers of Weitz & Luxenberg PC would like to inform the public of harmful emissions emanating from the Holcim Inc. cement plant in Dundee, Michigan.
According to submissions made by Holcim Inc. to the Toxic Release Inventory, maintained by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the cement plant emitted over 2 million pounds of toxic chemicals in 2006 alone.
Such emissions include lead, benzene, mercury and other toxins, which are released from kiln stacks, pre-heaters and cooling towers.
The emissions from the Holcim cement plant may be negatively impacting the air quality in the Village of Dundee and consequently the health of the community.
“Dundee residents have a right to take action if their health and welfare, or the value or the use and enjoyment of their property is being compromised by particles coming from a cement plant,” said Robin Greenwald, head of the Environmental Toxic Torts unit at Weitz & Luxenberg.
Greenwald and her unit’s lawyers are no strangers to seeking justice for those affected by harmful chemicals and refuse, recently filing an environmental lawsuit against the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) on behalf of over 100 citizens in Roane County and surrounding areas.
That legal action was prompted by a dike breach at the TVA plant, which led to the spill of over a billion gallons of toxic coal fly ash waste.
That waste has devalued property and is making some people sick.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cited Holcim Inc. in 2006 for alleged clean-air violations, contending that Holcim has exceeded limits on "opacity, or the amount of light obscured by particulates (smoke, dust, ash)."
Inhaling high concentrations of smoke, dust and ash can affect children, the elderly and people with heart and lung conditions. Lead exposure has been linked to reproductive problems, high blood pressure, nerve disorders, memory problems and muscle pain.
Benzene exposure may cause adult and childhood leukemia, lymphoma and other serious diseases.
Mercury exposure can raise the risk of heart disease in adults and cause a host of neurological problems in fetuses.
“We have got to take to the front lines in the battle for the environment,” said famed environmental advocate Erin Brockovich, who has been working with Weitz & Luxenberg lawyers to alert communities about pollution.
“This is the daily battle in a long-term movement inching us towards a better environment and a better life for us all,” Brockovich said.
Today, the Holcim plant occupies 2,000 acres in an industrial zone located two miles north of the Village of Dundee and 5.5 miles south of the city of Milan.
Residential housing and commercial businesses exist just steps away-- two miles north of the plant.
