News Report: Misdiagnosis leads to brain injury.
Hospital malpractice can result in injuries or death.
San Francisco supervisors gave their approval Tuesday to a $5.1 million settlement stemming from a 2005 incident of medical malpractice at San Francisco General Hospital, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, April 30, 2008. Numerous news reports reveal that incidences of injury and death continue to occur across the country due to hospital malpractice.
The paper reported that in documents filed in San Francisco Superior Court, the city admitted to mishandling the case of a man who visited the hospital complaining of fever and cough symptoms that had persisted for nearly a week. Medical staff determined that the man was suffering from acute renal failure and gave him sedatives. The hospital staff then allegedly failed to monitor him following successive doses of sedatives.
As a result, he suffered anoxic brain injury and now requires 24-hour care.
