HYDROXYCUT INGREDIENTS
Hydroxycut weight-loss products include ingredients that do not require preliminary FDA oversight
May 20, 2009 -- The Hydroxycut dietary supplements that have been linked to one death and consumer complaints of liver damage contain a variety of ingredients that do not require evidence of safety before they can be sold.
That’s because dietary supplements aren't as tightly regulated by the government as medications, according to a hydroxycut lawyer at the personal injury law firm of Weitz & Luxenberg.
Though manufacturers don't need to prove to the FDA that their products are safe and effective before they can sell them to consumers, regulators do monitor after-market reports for signs of trouble.
Reports of one death and two dozen cases of liver damage forced the manufacturer, Iovate Health Sciences, to recall 14 of its products. The recalled products contain a variety of ingredients that include herbal extracts.
Hydroxycut ingredients
Health officials said they have been unable to determine which Hydroxycut ingredients are potentially toxic, partially because the formulation has changed several times.
But a public health researcher said the problem may be an ingredient called “hydroxycitric acid.” Derived from a tropical fruit, it's been linked to liver problems in at least one medical journal study. It's likely that other supplements containing the same ingredient remain on the market, said the researcher.
