Liver Damage and Other Dangerous Side-Effects of Hydroxycut
On May 1st, 2009, the FDA released a press release with the headline: FDA Warns Consumers to Stop Using Hydroxycut Products: Dietary Supplements Linked to One Death; Pose Risk of Liver Injury. The press release entails that there have been 23 reports so far of serious injuries caused by Hydroxycut, a product used for losing weight and building muscle mass. The side-effects include:
- Liver Injury
- Seizures
- Cardiovascular disorders
- Rhabdomyolysis
- Jaundice
- Kidney failure
"The FDA urges consumers to discontinue use of Hydroxycut products in order to avoid any undue risk. Adverse events are rare, but exist. Consumers should consult a physician or other health care professional if they are experiencing symptoms possibly associated with these products," says Linda Katz, M.D., the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition’s interim chief medical officer.

- Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets
- Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
- Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
- Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
- Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
- Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
- Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
- Hydroxycut 24
- Hydroxycut Carb Control
- Hydroxycut Natural
So far, one death has occurred from using a Hydroxycut product. This incident involved a 19-year-old boy in the Southwest in 2007.
In 2008 alone, Iovate sold over 9 million units of Hydroxycut products. These products were sold to the general public in pharmacies, grocery stores, and health food stores.
