FDA recalls dangerous Hydroxycut products before more people are hurt
On May 1, 2009 the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a full recall of Hydroxycut products, which have been linked to liver disease, seizures and heart attacks, and other serious side effects. This laudable action to protect the public has left many consumers worried about dietary supplements and how using them may put them at risk. Having represented victims of Hydroxycut's dangerous side effects, Weitz & Luxenberg has an in-depth understanding of this recall.
Hydroxycut products fall into a class of over-the-counter dietary supplements the National Institute for Health (NIH) has designated “nutraceuticals.” Food and dietary supplements in this class typically list ingredients touted as "all natural;” however, the NIH cautions that “natural” does not always mean safe.
Hydroxycut has been linked to liver disorders including hepatitis, jaundice, and liver failure. Weitz & Luxenberg will give you the representation you deserve.
Prior to the recall, Hydroxycut products had been advertised across TV, print and the internet, and were sold in thousands of retail stores throughout the United States. The manufacturer claims the products worked to increase metabolism, help with weight-loss efforts, and give body builders an energy boost for grueling exercise regimens. These understandably desirable results are unproven, unlike the FDA's findings that Hydroxycut can cause internal damage to certain individuals.
Worse yet for the consumer, further research found evidence linking Hydroxycut to seizures, cardiovascular disorders, and rhabdomyolysis, a type of muscle damage that may eventually lead to kidney failure. Any one of these can be life-altering, sometimes permanently.
The FDA urges users to immediately discontinue using Hydroxycyut products and to seek immediate medical attention if they are experiencing any symptoms of liver disease. Even if you are not suffering any symptoms, it may be a good idea to consult a physician for a medical examination and testing. The earlier and longer you document your physical state the stronger your case will be if you experience health problems later on.
