HYDROXYCUT SIDE EFFECTS
Hydroxycut weight-loss products can lead to liver damage and “rhabdomyolysis”
With personal injury reports on the rise, including cases of liver damage and rhabdomyolysis, consumers are exploring hydroxycut lawsuit options with a specialized hydroxycut lawyer, and with a personal injury law firm of the caliber of Weitz & Luxenberg, P.C.
May 21, 2009 -- The manufacturer of a widely sold product line of dietary supplements marketed under the Hydroxycut brand name is recalling 14 of its products after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received consumer reports of liver disease and one death.
Hydroxycut products are dietary supplements that are marketed for weight-loss, as fat burners, as energy-enhancers, as low-carb diet aids, and for water loss under the Iovate and MuscleTech brand names. One or more Hydroxycut ingredients may be toxic, and tests are underway.
Hydroxycut side effects can include rhabdomyolysis
The FDA has received more than two dozen reports of serious Hydroxycut side effects ranging from jaundice and elevated liver enzymes, to liver damage requiring liver transplants. At least one death was linked to the products.
Other health problems reported include seizures, cardiovascular disorders, heart attacks, and "rhabdomyolysis," a type of muscle damage that can lead to serious health problems, such as kidney failure.
What is “rhabdomyolysis”?
Anything that destroys muscle tissue can cause rhabdomyolysis. The causes of rhabdomyolysis can be classified as either physical or non-physical.
Rhabdomyolysis is the rapid breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue due to muscle damage. The causes can be attributed to either physical (e.g., crush injury), chemical, or biological factors. Rhabdomyolysis can diagnosed with a simple blood test.
Damaged muscle tissue releases toxic breakdown products into the bloodstream. Some of these, such as “myoglobin,” are harmful to the kidney and may lead to acute kidney failure. Treatment is with intravenous fluids, and dialysis, or hemofiltration if necessary.
Pain, tenderness, weakness and swelling of the affected muscles may be present. If the swelling is very rapid, low blood pressure and shock may be present due to depletion of fluid from the bloodstream.
