A Public Service Announcement for Identity Theft Victims
Although Weitz & Luxenberg does not represent identity theft victims, as a service to the public, we want to reprint advice from the Federal Trade Commission for those who suspect they have been a victim of identity theft.
1. Notify any one of the three major credit bureaus that you believe your identity has been stolen. This will enable them to put out a "fraud alert" and requests that you are notified if anyone tries to open a new account or tamper with an existing one.
Equifax
(800) 685-1111
Experian
(888) 397-3742
TransUnion
(800) 680-7289
2. If you believe that one of your bank accounts or other accounts has been compromised, close it.
3. File a report with the police.
4. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Follow the link below to download the necessary forms to do this.
5. Make sure you periodically request your credit report, and check over it carefully.
Please reference the FTC's identity theft site for more information, as well as forms you can fill out to make a complaint, or report that your identity has been stolen.

Weitz & Luxenberg is pleased to offer this important information to the general community. This information is not intended as legal advice, but just as general reference.
