Power Outage Causes Death of Woman Confined to Iron Lung
On May 28. 2008, a woman who spent over 57 years living in an iron lung died. Her death was caused by a general power failure, which also caused fatal problems with the backup generator powering the device.
While Dianne Odell, a 61 year old resident of Jackson, Tennessee was confined to the iron lung since she was diagnosed with bulbo-spinal polio when she was three years old. Because polio caused a spinal deformity, Ms. Odell was never able to be fitted for one of the portable breathing devices worn by patients suffering from other diseases or injuries that cause a patient to be able to breathe unassisted.
