On July 26, 2010, residents in the Kalamazoo, Michigan region found themselves facing environmental disaster after an oil pipeline owned by Canadian energy company Enbridge Energy Partners LLP burst.
The resulting break in a 30-inch pipeline in nearby Marshall has caused an estimated 1 million gallons of crude oil to spill into Talmadge Creek, which feeds into the Kalamazoo River.
The Kalamazoo River oil spill site area is located between Marshall and Battle Creek, and includes residential areas, farmlands, marshlands and businesses.
Environmental Investigation
Immediately after the oil pipeline burst, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began an investigation into the Michigan oil spill, its cleanup and containment. They are also reviewing data about potential environmental and health implications for families living in the area, as well as potential harm to marine and wildlife native to the Kalamazoo River region.
The EPA has undertaken air monitoring of levels of benzene and other volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions caused by the spill, and will be providing updates to Kalamazoo area residents of any potential health risks.
