Sanofi-Aventis Updates Ketek Safety Info In Canada
October 4, 2006, Dow Jones
Weitz and Luxenberg is no longer accepting Ketek cases.
CANADA--The prescribing information for Ketek now recommends that the product
not be advised for patients with a previous history of hepatitis and sensitivity
to this type of antibiotic.
Ketek, whose generic name is telithromycin,
is the first of a new family of antimicrobial drugs known as ketolides, which
have been developed to kill strains that have become resistant to older
antibiotics.
Doctors should also monitor patients for symptoms that may
indicate liver problems, the Health Canada document said. Health Canada's
decision follows a similar move by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which
in June introduced a stronger warning on the drug-prescribing information.
