The Environmental Protection Agency is now assessing the damage to the area's water supply, with the hope it was not contaminated by lead, mercury and arsenic.
According to an article in the New York Times on December 24, 2008, the Tennessee Valley Authority estimated that 1.7 million cubic yards of fly ash, from coal incineration, broke through a wall at a T.V.A Kingston power plant, about 40 miles from Knoxville.
Reportedly, the sludge damaged 15 houses, pushing one off its foundation, and caused the evacuation of 22 residences.
Kingston and Harriman residents and those in surrounding areas are deeply concerned about water supplies as the sludge was determined to have flowed into the Emory River, a tributary of the Tennessee River, which provides drinking water to millions of people downstream.
Both the Times and cable network CNN reported that environmentalists consider the spill more than 30 times larger than the Exxon Valdez oil spill, which invariably sparked a lawsuit due to the tremendous negligence involved.
