Lafarge cement plant in Ravena, New York drew criticism from environmentalists after it was revealed this year to be the state's largest source of emissions of mercury, a potent neurotoxin that can cause developmental problems in children and developing fetuses, according to the Times Union newspaper in New York. This has sparked inquiry into an environmental lawsuit.
The Environmental Protection Agency has stated that outbreaks of mercury poisonings have made it clear that adults, children, and developing fetuses are at risk from ingestion exposure to mercury.
During these poisoning outbreaks some mothers with no symptoms of nervous system damage gave birth to infants with severe disabilities, it became clear that the developing nervous system of the fetus may be more vulnerable to methylmercury than is the adult nervous system.
