Lafarge meeting to discuss report findings on dust and metals near cement plant in Ravena
March 26, 2010--A wildlife pathologist has been studying plant and animal samples he took from the areas around the Lafarge Cement Plant in Ravena, New York. He plans to discuss his findings in a scheduled meeting in a few days.
Dr. Ward Stone, who has been conducting an ongoing study regarding possible pollution emanating from the Lafarge-Ravena plant, plans to update affected community members on his findings on March 30, 2010, according to The Daily Mail newspaper out of Greene County.
Attend the Lafarge meeting
According to the Mail, the meeting will be hosted by advocacy group Community Advocates for Safe Emissions, and will be held at:
Ravena VFW Hall on Whitbeck Street, near Mosher Park at 7 p.m. March 30.
Stone's analysis includes tested samples for heavy metals including mercury, lead and cadmium. In September, his ongoing testing revealed high levels of mercury in all samples from areas near the Lafarge-Ravena Cement plant.
Families in the area have noticed layers of dust on their cars. Stone reportedly said the dust often blows off of trucks entering and leaving Lafarge and the nearby Callanan Industries asphalt plant and quarry.
In September, consumer advocate Erin Brockovich, together with attorneys from our firm, visited Ravena to discuss the pollution.
Lafarge reported mercury emissions of between 380 and 400 pounds per year from 2003 to 2006, according to information from the Environmental Protection Agency. Its 2008 estimate was 146 pounds.
