Ravena residents: You have a right to a clean and safe environment free of Lafarge's mercury emissions.
Learn about how we can help with an environmental lawsuit.
Lafarge cement plant in Ravena reported in 2003 that it emitted 40 pounds of mercury from its smokestacks, but testing revealed the plant actually released about 400 pounds of mercury into the air, according to the Daily Gazette newspaper in Schenectady, New York.
Ravena families have a right to protect themselves from mercury, and other toxins emitted by corporate polluters such as Lafarge.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, mercury is a neurotoxin. Outbreaks of methylmercury poisonings have made it clear that adults, children, and developing fetuses are at risk from ingestion exposure to mercury.
When mothers with no symptoms of nervous system damage gave birth to infants with severe disabilities, it became clear that the developing fetal nervous system is more vulnerable to methylmercury than is an adult's nervous system.
The most common way people are exposed to any form of mercury is by eating fish containing mercury.
