Mattel settles lead paint toy probe for $12 million
December 19, 2008 – Just in time for the holidays, officials report that toy maker Mattel Inc. will pay $12 million to 39 states, including New York, to settle a lead paint lawsuit over Chinese-made toys shipped to the United States last year.
Mattel, and its Fisher Price unit, recalled two million of these toys in 2007, including Sesame Street dolls, Dora the Explorer accessories and dozens of other products from China the children’s toy manufacturer suspected were tainted with lead paint. The toys reportedly never reached store shelves.
The $12-million settlement was filed this week in state court in Boston and resolves a 15-month investigation into the matter that had upset parents this time last year. El Segundo, Calif.-based Mattel is the world’s largest toy maker.
Mattel issued a statement this week saying it had “taken steps that go beyond current requirements to give parents greater confidence that the Mattel toys that they buy this holiday season will be the safest ever.”
