What is Radiology?
Radiology is a specialized medical field that involves the use of radiation for imaging purposes. A radiologist studies MRIs X-Rays, CT scans and other such diagnostics in order to identify any internal injuries, bleeding, fractures or abnormalities. On December 21st, 2006, the Boston Herald reported a tragic example of radiology malpractice. A negligent radiologist missed a tumor that had been growing on his female patient’s spine. Sadly, because the tumor was left undetected for two years, it doubled in size and metastasized to her lungs. Had it been detected early, the spinal chordoma could have been removed, but because of its size, doctors could not risk removing it.

On January 18th, 2006, The Washington Post reported that the rate of medical error was especially high in hospital radiology. Researchers from the Center for the Advancement of Patient Safety, found that of the 823,268 errors reported by 315 hospitals between 2000 and 2004, an alarming 2,032 of them occurred in radiology departments. 12 percent of those errors “resulted in some kind of harm to patients.”
