Study of Lexapro for Older Adults with Anxiety
The results of a research study on the antidepressant drug Lexapro revealed that when the drug is prescribed to older patients with symptoms of anxiety, it shows what was termed a “modest” effect in easing symptoms. Older patients suffering from generalized anxiety disorder experience symptoms such as muscle tension, insomnia and fatigue.
The researchers studied 177 people aged 60 or older with generalized anxiety disorder. In the 12 week study, participants received either doses of Lexapro or a placebo. The researchers found that 69 percent of patients who received Lexapro showed improvement in symptoms. 51 percent of the patients who received the placebo also showed improvement in their anxiety symptoms.
