On December 15, 2009, the Southeast Regional Office of Environmental Protection sent a letter to 47 homes in Limerick, PA regarding public water main and service connection. The wells of those area residents had been tested by the DEP and found to be contaminated with hazardous substances. Below is the letter:
You are receving this letter because your home is in the area designated by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (Department) as the Turtle Creek HSCA site (Site). The Site is located along West Linfield Trappe Road and around North Lewis and South Limerick Roads in Limerick Township, Montgomery County.
Environmental investigations of the area have identified hazardous substances in the groundwater, specifically the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) 1,1-Dichloroethylene, Tetrachloro ethylene (PCE), and Trichloroethylene (TCE). Some domestic wells in and'around the Site have VOCs at levels above applicable drinking water standards. Homes with VOCs at levels near or above applicable drinking water standards are being provided with bottled water and/or a carbon filtration system.
Teleflex, Inc. (Teleflex), and The Stanley Works (Stanley) are working cooperatively with the Department to do what is needed to eliminate any potential for exposure to groundwater contamination at the Site and to take long term steps to protect public health.
The most efficient and effective method to protect your health is to extend the public water main in your area and to connect your home to public water. Stanley and Teleflex have agreed to install a public water main on your street and to connect, at no-cost, individual homes to the public water system. Connection to the public water supply is important because it will provide residents with a plentiful, reliable water supply that is tested regularly by the water authority. In addition, it will eliminate the inconvenience of using bottled water and having your well continuously tested. The public water supply will also enhance fire protection service by providing hydrants in the neighborhood.
Shortly you will receive an information packet explaining in greater detail the public water main installation and hone connection process. As you may already know, Stanley and Teleflex are working with two environmental consulting companies, Roux Associates (Roux) and WSP Environment & Energy (WSP), to help investigate the groundwater conditions, assist with sampling activities, bottled water delivery, and/or carbon-filter maintenance.
In addition, Roux and WSP will assist with all phases of the public water main's installation and your home's connection to it. A representative from Roux or WSP will contact you in the near future to address any water service questions that you may have and to begin making arrangements for connecting your home.
Please contact Ms. Lynda Rebarchak, HSCA Community Relations Coordinator, at 484-250-5820 or by e-mail at lrebarchak firstname.lastname@example.org or me at 484-250-5721 or the above e-mail address with any questions or concerns you may have regarding the activity at the Site. We hope that you will strongly consider connecting your home to the public water supply.
