Barack Obama To Try to Quit Smoking; Cites Risk of Lung Cancer

The Boston Globe reports that presidential candidate Barack Obama is trying to quit smoking cigarettes. Cigarette smoking is a leading cause of lung cancer. Mr. Obama is aware that his smoking habit may hurt his presidential campaign.

The Globe speculates that drawing attention to the fact that Mr. Obama is attempting to quit his nicotine habit may help his campaign but also warns that voters may be alienated by the candidate’s smoking addiction.

Indeed, as the Globe observes, waiters, bartenders and others who are exposed to secondhand smoke at work, may be especially inclined to vote against a presidential candidate who smokes because they are adversely affected by the smoking habit of others.

Further, the scientific data clearly points out cigarette smoking as one of the major causes of lung cancer. According to the Boston Globe, 90% of lung cancers in men and 80% of lung cancers in women are due to smoking.
