Canada delayed release of international health report linking profitable asbestos industry to lung cancer
April 16, 2009 – Canada’s delayed release of a medical report on the relationship between asbestos and lung cancer has refocused public attention on the future of the asbestos industry in Canada – a hot political issue in Quebec, where the nation’s asbestos mining industry is centered.
At issue is the report’s conclusion that there is a “strong relationship” between lung cancer and the chrysotile asbestos ore that is profitably mined in Quebec. Asbestos is a multimillion-dollar industry in Canada.
Health Canada, the nation’s federal health organization, received the report from a panel of international experts in March 2008, but held on to it for more than a year, according to Canadian news service Canwest, which had to wait 10 months to receive the report under Canada’s Access to Information act.
For months, panel chairman Trevor Ogden called for the agency to release the findings, and branded the stall “an annoying piece of needless government secrecy.”
A spokesperson for Health Canada attributed the delay in the report’s release to “time necessary to carefully review the findings of the report, and to consult other federal and provincial partners.”
Report: Quebec-Canada asbestos causes lung cancer
The asbestos mining industry in Canada is concentrated in a Quebec community called Thetford Mines, which today generates approximately 550 jobs.
One of the world’s largest exporters of chrysotile asbestos, Canada last year exported more than $100 million worth of the toxic ore to developing nations like India, Indonesia and Thailand, where regulations are lax or nonexistent and a lung cancer lawyer or a mesothelioma lawyer are unheard of.
