WHAT IS LUNG SARCOIDOSIS?
January 15, 2010 – Lung sarcoidosis is a respiratory disease believed to be caused by an alteration in the body’s immune system after exposure to an environmental agent, such as air pollution.
Sarcoidosis is usually asymptomatic, which means there are usually no outward signs that the person has the disease.
But when symptoms of lung sarcoidosis appear, they can include shortness of breath and a dry persisting cough. Sometimes this is accompanied by skin rashes, inflammation in the eye, fever or weight loss.
Anyone who suspects they have sarcoidosis of the lungs is urged to schedule an X-ray examination with their family doctor or local hospital.
A chest X-ray is the most reliable way to diagnose lung sarcoidosis. In more than 90 percent of patients with sarcoidosis, abnormalities will show up in an X-ray.
Abnormalities associated with lung sarcoidosis include swelling and inflammation of the lymph nodes in the chest and a mottled appearance to lung tissue.
In severe cases, lung sarcoidosis can lead to lung fibrosis, which causes the lungs to stiffen and makes breathing difficult. Unfortunately, fibrosis is irreversible. If extensive, it can cause severe dysfunction and, at its worse, can lead to heart failure.
